VEGAS Pro 22

VEGAS Pro 22 Update 2

  • Auto Normalize

This new video-event switch automatically recalculates the normalization for an event after you edit that event. Several different edits could trigger this recalculation, including slip and slide edits. For example, with the traditional Normalize switch active, when you split an event, the normalization of the second resulting event remains the same as it was before the split. With the Auto Normalize switch active, when you make that split, VEGAS recalculates the normalization of both events. Or, if you trim an event to eliminate all the media's highest peaks, the remainder will renormalize. The Auto Normalize switch makes it possible to edit audio events with the assurance that the normalization recalculates and updates based on the audio that remains so you don’t have to renormalize automatically after each edit.

For more information, see Auto Normalize

  • Auto Ducking

This feature provides the ability to automatically “duck” the volume of one or more tracks based upon the audio present in one or more other tracks. As a simple example, you can set a narration track as an Auto Ducking Control track. This creates a new Auto Ducking control envelope on that track based upon the amplitude of the audio present on the track. You can then establish a “listening” relationship between the control track and another track that contains other audio, like music. When you play your project, the listener track’s volume reacts to the volume changes that the control envelope dictates. You can use this to create a hard duck to a level you specify, or a sophisticated duck map that reacts to the varying volume levels of the control track according to parameters you set.

For more information, see Auto Ducking

  • Multicam Audio Sync enhancements

This tool has been improved so that it is no longer necessary to choose the best detection algorithm (general, voice, or music) for your job. It now analyzes your content and selects the best method for you to save you a great deal of experimentation time and provide even more accurate results. File format compatibility has been improved and now supports file formats like iPhone videos.

  • AI Assistant (requires separate feature installer)

The AI Assistant enables you to describe the video you want to create in a detailed chat prompt. The assistant asks clarifying questions to help you refine your idea and the desired output. Once you are satisfied that you’ve described the video adequately, the assistant searches for and provides several options for video media and music, creates a script for your video, turns the script into a natural-sounding narration file, gives you the ability to choose the media you want, and finally assembles a rough-cut storyboard on your VEGAS Pro timeline. Once the media is in place on your timeline, you can edit the project for timing, replace the placeholder media with your own footage and audio, or do anything else that’s possible with the extensive VEGAS Pro feature set.

VEGAS Pro 22

  • Beat Detection

The Beat Detection tool analyzes a music file (or music in a video file) and marks highlights, syncopated hits, drum rolls or any “interesting” events in the low-mid and low-end of the audio frequency range. The markers serve as snap objects, so when you add the file to your timeline you can easily edit your video to the musical beats.

For more information, see Beat Detection

  • Tempo Detection

The Tempo Detection tool analyzes a piece of music (or the music in a video file) to determine the tempo of the piece and automatically sets your project properties to match the detected tempo. This makes editing the project easy, as you can now set your timeline ruler to measures and beats and use the grid as orientation and snap points for seamless cuts and edits in time with the music.

For more information, see Tempo Detection

  • New MultiCam Audio Sync

Synchronizing multicam events based on the audio from the clips the events hold has been completely reworked. You can now select multiple events and quickly synchronize them with options optimized for the type of audio contained in the clips.

For more information, see Synchronizing Multicamera Audio

  • AI Auto Reframe

This AI-assisted tool automatically reframes your video when the delivery size of your final render does not match the original aspect ratio. For instance, if you have a standard widescreen video and need to deliver it in a square format for Instagram or other channels, this tool shifts focus to the most important object in the video and keeps it centered in the new frame size while other material is cropped out.

For more information, see AI Auto Reframe

  • AI DeHaze

This AI-assisted plug-in analyzes your video for hazy elements like smoke, fog, smog and so on and removes those elements in order to create a more crisp, clearer image of your main video element.

For more information, see AI Dehaze

  • AI Sharpen

Driven by AI, the AI Sharpen tool analyzes the edges of objects in your video and enhances them to give the image a crisper, clearer lock. The enhancement can be used to improve your video’s clarity or in many cases as a special effect to give your video an unnaturally crisp look.

For more information, see AI Sharpen

  • AI Smoothen

You can use this AI-driven tool to soften the edges of objects in your video. This can result in something similar to a smudge effect where edges are not so clearly delineated. You can use a small amount to give your video a subtly softer appearance, or a large amount to create more of a special effect on your video.

For more information, see AI Smoothen

  • New Welcome Screen

The Welcome screen has been completely redesigned to make it even more useful in helping you start your editing session. Three tabs give you quick access to new-project setup, previous projects, and materials to help you use VEGAS more effectively.

For more information, see Welcome Screen

  • Timeline Selection improvements

The timeline selection techniques have been refined to make selecting events even easier. An intuitive left-click on an empty timeline space now enables you to start a selection rectangle which you can modify in order to select whichever events you want

For more information, see Creating selections and positioning the cursor

  • Text-based Editing full release

Improvements and refinements have been made to the Text-based Editing tools based on the feedback we received during the beta release cycle. You can now more efficiently edit your video timeline by performing edits in the text transcript.

For more information, see Text-Based Editing

  • Set the project tempo

New menu options make it easy to set your project tempo. With these you can easily open the project audio properties and enter the desired tempo. When you then set your timeline ruler bar to Measures and Beats, the ruler will accurately reflect the project tempo. When you match the project tempo to the tempo of the music in your timeline, you can easily use the ruler to edit to precise measures and beats of the music.

For more information, see Time ruler

VEGAS Pro 21 Update 3

  • AI Smart Mask 2.0 plugin

This plug-in uses AI to identify objects in your video and accurately mask them. You can create up to eight separate masks and apply tracking to them so that the masks follow along with objects in the video even if they’re moving. This can help you replace backgrounds without having shot in front of a green screen.

For more information, see AI Smart Mask 2.0

  • AI Text-Based Editing (beta)

You can use the Speech to Text features to create a transcript of your project video and then edit the transcript—for example, delete a section of text or cut and paste text, etc.—and VEGAS automatically edits the events on your timeline to match the edits you made in the transcript. The opposite is also possible. For instance, if you trim an event on the timeline, VEGAS Pro automatically edits the transcript to match. This workflow can greatly speed up your editing process.

For more information, see AI Speech to Text

  • AV1 GPU support

Support for AV1 continues to grow in VEGAS Pro. With this step, AV1 decoding utilizes GPU decoding codecs on Nvidia and AMD hardware which supports AV1 decoding.

  • New preferences to manage .sfk files

Two new preferences enable you to manage newly created SFK files. The Hide new .sfk files preference flags newly created SFK files as hidden so that they honor your Windows Hidden Files settings. The Do not create .sfk files to store peak data preference prevents VEGAS from creating .sfk files.

For more information, see General Tab

  • Optimized GPU processing for AVC & HEVC files

VEGAS Pro now employs a newly optimized, more efficient pipeline for decoding more AVC & HEVC file subvariants. This results in much better timeline playback performance with higher, more consistent framerates for accurate previews.

  • VEGAS Content media can now be added directly to the timeline

In addition to the original Download button that enables you to download any VEGAS Content file to your local drive, two new buttons have been added.

For more information, see Adding Stock Content

  • New menu option to allow user to download the VEGAS user manual for offline help reference

This menu option enables you to download the user manual so that you can access it even when you do not have an active internet connection. You can also then easily print all or part of the document if you need a hard copy of the help content.

  • Media Share

This window consolidates the Quick Upload and File Drop operations of previous versions of the VEGAS Hub Explorer into one central location. You can create a new Media Share collection and upload files to it by dragging files into it or scanning a QR code with your mobile device camera. You can create links that enable collaborators to view files you’ve uploaded, invite them to upload their own files, and manage your existing upload/download activity from this window.

VEGAS Pro 21 (build 108)

  • VEGAS AI Z-Depth OFX plug-in and compositor

The Z-Depth tool enables you to achieve creative compositing results. With it you can define a threshold point between two layers in your still image or video—a foreground layer and a background layer—and then treat those layers differently. For instance, you can place text behind some objects in an image yet still in front of other objects in the same image. Or you can give the background an effect treatment such as a blur or color correction without affecting objects that you’ve defined as on the foreground.

    For more information AI Z-Depth

  • Adjustment events

Adjustment events provide a powerful tool for adding effects to your project in very flexible and creative ways. You can add an adjustment event to your project and apply effects to that event. Then, any video event in your timeline directly below the adjustment event will “inherit” the effect from the adjustment event. You can use this to easily bring effects in and out, create sophisticated customer transitions, and much more.

For more information, see Adjustment events

  • New GL Transitions

Two new presets have been added to the GL Transitions transition type. The Static Wipe preset enables you to add a generated-static edge to the transition line between the two clips. The Directional Scale preset scales the first clip smaller and moves it off in a specified direction while it simultaneously scales the next clip larger and moves it on in the specified direction.

  • Offset and Wrap OFX plug-in

The Offset and Wrap OFX plug-in enables you to create motion effects on your video images. For instance, you can slide the video in any direction and have whatever “leaves” one edge of the video frame wraps around to the other edge of the frame. You can tile or mirror the image for further special effects. This tool really comes in handy in conjunction with Adjustment events to create modern, exciting video transitions and other effects.

For more information, see Offset and Wrap

  • Smart Masking

This plug-in analyzes a video frame and uses artificial intelligence technology to identify objects in the frame that you can generate a mask for. You can filter out any objects below your accepted confidence level. Once the tool has identified an object or objects you want to create a mask for, the tool will add a Bézier Masking plug-in to your FX chain with a mask already in place. You can then fully adjust your new mask to correct for any masking inaccuracies. The tool also tracks motion so that you can create smart masks for video files.

For more information, see AI Smart Mask

  • VEGAS Mocha

This version of the Mocha motion tracking tool has been developed by Boris FX specifically for use in VEGAS Pro. You can invoke the software from inside VEGAS Pro and perform all the sophisticated motion tracking that this industry-standard tool offers. Once you’ve created the tracking data inside Mocha, you can easily transfer that data to the VEGAS Pro Motion Tracking tool and apply it to your project in all the normal ways. You can also apply the tracking data to the Stabilization tool in VEGAS Pro for great video stabilization results.

For more information, see Mocha Vegas

  • Cloud-based text to speech

VEGAS Text to Speech functionality has been transferred from a local-based feature to a cloud-based feature through VEGAS Hub. This brings a great deal of expanded functionality to the feature including scores of additional languages and voices, the ability to access new voices and features as soon as they’re ready without a new build of VEGAS Pro, and more.

For more information, see AI Text to Speech

  • Quick Upload

The Quick Upload function enables you to upload files from your computer or other device to your VEGAS Hub File Drop collections. This makes it possible to quickly upload files to your Hub storage that you can then download to another computer for adding to the VEGAS Pro timeline or for a cloud back up of your media files.

For more information, see Media Share

  • Improved Button icons

With newly updated button icons throughout different areas of the application, it’s much easier for you to identify buttons—especially in a selected state—as well as seeing more obvious change behavior when you point to a button. This enables you to more quickly identify the important buttons and their click state so that you can work more efficiently.

  • Online Help

The VEGAS help file has been moved into the VEGAS Hub so that it exists online and is available to all VEGAS users including trial users. While this requires you to have an active internet connection to access the application help, it brings significant benefits in terms of flexibility and the possibility to update content far more quickly.

VEGAS Pro 20Closed

VEGAS Pro 20 Update 3 (build 402)

  • Multiple Smart Masks

This enhancement to the AI Smart Mask feature enables you to create more than one mask at a time. This will be useful if you have more than one object in a video frame that you want to mask.

For more information, see AI Smart Mask

  • AI Smart Mask generated shape improvements

The AI Smart Mask plug-in now uses a depth-based model to generate masks over identified objects. This results in more accurate masking and less time spent modifying the mask in the Beziér plug-in.

  • Transfer Text properties

This button in the Titles & Text media generator enables you to instantly apply the characteristics of one text event to all other text events on the same track. For example, if you have dozens of lower third text events in your project and decide to use a different color, font, size, and/or other characteristic for all of them, you only need to change the characteristics for one of the events and then can instantly apply the change or changes to all of the rest of them

For more information, see Transfer Text Properties

  • Window docking improvements

Improvements to the window docking feature make it much easier to accurately customize your window layout. Much larger and well-defined target areas enable you to accurately select the docking target (existing dock area, new horizontal dock area, or new vertical dock area). The new outline indicators help you to see exactly where the window will dock when you release the mouse button.

For more information, see Window Docking Area and Floating Window Docks

  • Select a device for RAW processing

A preference on the File I/O tab now enables you to specify the device you want to use for RAW processing. This delinks the RAW processing accelerator from the video processing accelerator and enables you to specify the best option for both of them. This is especially useful to you if you have multiple GPUs in your system because you can spread the processing work between two of them. This gives you higher overall GPU utilization and access to more processing power.

  • RAW processing with CUDA

CUDA processing enables VEGAS to take advantage of the native API of NVIDIA GPUs. This further accelerates RAW processing for real-time preview, reduces rendering times, and improves stability.

  • Improvements to the Welcome screen

You can now choose various frame rates for your new project from a new drop-down list. Switching to a list also creates room for another drop-down list that you can use to specify your project resolution.

  • New Sharp Model for Upscale plugin

  • Support for Mocha shape data

Track the shape of an object with Mocha, then import the shape data into the VEGAS Motion Tracking workflow and to the Bézier Mask plug-in.

For more information, see Adding or replacing plug-ins in an FX chain

  • Hue vs Luminance color curve

This curve enables you to define a hue or the average of a range of hues in the video and then adjust the luminance of just that color. This way you can control Luminance levels that range from the entire video to very targeted areas of the video based on selected hue. For example, you could sample a range of blues and then increase the luminance to make the color look brighter

For more information, see Hue vs Luminance color curve

  • Saturation vs Luminance

This curve enables you to define a range of saturation levels in the video and then adjust the luminance level of just that range. You can control luminance levels that range from the entire video to very targeted areas of the video based on current saturation levels. For example, you could define a saturation range that includes everything below a certain level and raise the luminance on that range to make everything in that saturation range look a bit brighter.

For more information, see Saturation vs Luminance

  • Luminance vs Saturation

This curve enables you to define a range of luminance levels in the video and then adjust the saturation level of just that range. You can control saturation levels that range from the entire video to very targeted areas of the video based on current luminance levels. For example, you could define a luminance range that includes everything above a certain level and raise the saturation on that range to make everything in that luminance range look more vibrant.

For more information, see Luminance vs Saturation

  • Picture-in-Picture plugin enhancements

You can now easily change the aspect ratio of the Picture-in-Picture box so that you can stretch the image inside the box vertically, horizontally, or both. Once the tool has identified an object you want to create a mask for, the tool will add a Bézier Masking plug-in to your FX chain with a mask already in place. You can then fully adjust your new mask to correct for any masking inaccuracies.

For more information, see AI Smart Mask

  • Welcome Screen

On startup, VEGAS will display a dialog which will quickly let you select a project to open to, or create a new project. If no recent projects exist, the option of two different window layouts is presented to the user. If the user would prefer not to see this window on startup, a preference has been added to turn it off on the General area of the preferences dialog.

  • Animation control over individual Bézier mask points

You can set keyframes to control the shape and position of your mask at various times. As with other keyframes, VEGAS then animates the settings from one point to the next. With this, you can animate the shape and position of your masks over time.

For more information, see Animation control over individual Bézier mask points

  • Indicator of active Auto Ripple Edit mode

When you engage Auto Ripple mode, the event boarder that highlights a selected event turns from yellow to red. The timeline cursor also changes to red. These indicators will help you avoid accidentally making ripple edits when you’ve forgotten that you are in Auto Ripple mode.

For more information, see Applying a post-edit ripples automatically

VEGAS Pro 20 Update 1 (build 214)

  • Hue vs Saturation color curve

This curve enables the user to define a hue or a hue range and adjust the saturation of that value. Thus, the user can change the saturation of anything from the entire video to a very specific hue in the video. For example, the user could define a range of blue values and raise the saturation of those values to make the blues in the video more vibrant.

For more information, see Hue vs. Saturation color curve

  • Saturation vs Saturation color curve

This curve enables the user to define a range of saturation levels in the video and then adjust the saturation level of just that range. This enables the user to control saturation levels that range from the entire video to very targeted areas of the video based on current saturation levels. For example, the user could define a saturation range that includes everything below a level of 150 and remove the saturation from that range so that everything that was originally below 150 would now be completely desaturated.

For more information, see Saturation vs. Saturation color curve

  • Color selector for color curves

With this the user can easily sample a value or a range of values in the video to which the curve adjustments will apply. This makes it easy, for example, to target a specific hue or a range of hues that will be affected by the adjustments made with the curve.

For more information, see Color Selector

  • Zoomable preview

The user can now zoom into and out of the Video Preview window. This helps especially to see the details of an object while working with the Bèzier Masking tools and seeing fine details of color grading adjustments. The user can zoom into any target area of the video preview window and scroll the zoomed view to see different areas without first zooming back out.

For more information, see Zooming and Panning in the Video Preview Window

  • Comment field for File Drop

This intelligently chooses a frame of the video file uploaded through File Drop to represent the content of the video. This avoids the problem caused using the video’s first frame when files fade from black.

VEGAS Pro 20 release

  • White balance controls:

The White Balance controls in the Color Grading panel help you correct colors caused by light temperatures that weren’t accounted for in the camera during shooting. Different types of lights have different color temperatures with sunlight of around 5,700 Kalvin being used as a “natural-light” baseline target. The Temperature slider enables you to adjust your color temperature to more closely match sunlight so that whites really look white instead of having a color cast from incorrectly set color temperature. The Tint slider enables you to lighten or darken your colors by adding a magenta or green tint. The Color picker enables you to sample a neutral color (white or gray) and have the software apply an automatic temperature adjustment for you.

For more information, see White Balance controls

  • Hue vs. Hue color curve:

This curve enables you to isolate a specific range of color (hues) in your video and change the hue of that range to a different hue. For example, if someone is wearing a blue shirt, you could isolate a range of blue hues and then adjust just that range of hues to a different hue value in order to change the color of the shirt without affecting any other colors in the video (although anything within that blue range will be affected, not just the shirt). This can be used for a drastic special effect such as this, or for more subtle color grading and correction that affects just a specific color range in your video.

For more information, see Hue vs. Hue color curve

  • Automatic project collections:

A Project collection organizes all of your project’s assets into a single view that you can easily access through the Hub Explorer window. These collections provide fast and easy access to all of your projects and their associated files. When you save your project, VEGAS Pro automatically creates a project collection, or updates your existing collection. You can then access the media within a project collection and use it in the same or a different project. You can upload your collections to your VEGAS Hub file storage to archive your projects and the associated media

For more information, see Automatic project collections

  • File Drop:

The File Drop feature enables you to quickly gather media for your project from collaborators no matter where you or they are located. Support for VST3 ensures that VEGAS Pro can work with the most modern VST audio plug-ins available.

  • New GL transitions:

Two new transitions have been added: Honeycomb creates a honeycomb effect that transitions from one video to the next. Color Planes breaks the images into their RGB components, changes from the first image to the second, and then recombines the three color planes into one composite color image of the second video

For more information, see GL Transitions

  • Transition Progress envelopes with animation:

The Transition Progress envelope enables the user to control the rate of a transition over time and animate the progress so that it goes fast, slower, or even in reverse. This gives the user power to create custom transition behavior and includes Bèzier curve tools for complete control over the rate of change between animation points along the curve.

For more information, see Transition Progress with animation

  • Scene detection creates regions:
